Pilates for Stand Up Paddleboarding

Benefits of Pilates and watersports

As a keen surfer, I was intrigued to try Stand up Paddleboarding (SUP).   From a Pilates perspective I knew that having a strong core and good balance had to stand me in good stead!  It wasn’t until I got on the board I realised how much my Pilates training would help me.   SUP has many benefits, to list a few:

Improves balance – SUP requires you to stand upright on the board, this turns on core stability.

All over workout – So many muscles are used during paddleboarding.  Legs & core work to stabilise the body, while the entire torso and arms are used to push the board through the water.

Concentration & co-ordination – It requires concentration to stay stable whilst paddling against the waves.  This is great for focusing the mind and also relieving stress.  Being on the water is calming yet invigorating, also great for our mental health.

So I realise that so many of the benefits of SUP are similar to Pilates.  Which is why Pilates can assist so much.  Some benefits of Pilates are:

Create a strong core.

Improve co-ordination and concentration.

Increase balance and strength.

Improve stamina

Release tension.

Practicing Pilates on a regular basis will make SUP a breeze!  You will be up and powering through the water with ease.  I would definitely recommend getting to class soon and I can absolutely recommend Paddleboarding!
